Beat Post-Vacation BluesStepping away from your veterinary practice, putting on your “out of office” message and spending a few days exploring somewhere new has a multitude of benefits for both your physical and mental health. In fact, studies show that taking a vacation can effectively lower stress levels, increase cardiovascular health and improve productivity upon return.

But it can be tough coming back to reality. How can you capitalize on that vacation high once you return back to your normal day-to-day responsibilities? In other words: How do you fight the post-vacation blues?

As it turns out, there are deliberate steps you can take to make sure the transition from “vacation mode” to “work mode” isn’t too dreadful.

Get Back on Schedule
Vacation often means packing your days with adventures. From sightseeing to late nights out on the town to just basking in the sun, you’re likely to feel a little rundown by the end of your trip. It’s especially important that when you return home you get back into your normal routine. Chief on the list is getting some much-needed sleep so you’re refreshed on your first day back at the veterinary clinic and not dragging from exam room to exam room.

Plan Your Next Trip
Yes, one wonderful vacation has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give yourself another vacation to look forward to. Even if you don’t have the funds to pay for another plane ticket yet, just thinking of where you want to go can help get you out of that slump. Create a Pinterest board of your top three vacation locations for next year, or bookmark hotels and excursions that catch your eye.

Revisit Your Favorite Memories
Your recent vacation doesn’t have to be a thing of the past; make the most of the photos you took. Share your favorite memories and their accompanying snapshots with friends or coworkers, create a photo album or simply frame your favorite shot. Not only will your mood brighten when you’re retelling stories, but each time you look back at those photos, you’ll be reminded of all the fun you had.

Take Advantage of New Found Interests
Did you pick up a new hobby on your trip? Rediscover your love for art museums? There’s no need to abandon new passions just because you’ve traded your bathing suit for a lab coat again. With a little research, you’re likely to find a ton of exciting places to explore right within your own city — or at least within driving distance.
