According to AAA, 79 percent of Americans will be hitting the highways this summer for a family roadtrip. Think sunny skies, barbeques and beach time. But the big question is, among all the states in our vast country — whether they’re home to major cities, tranquil shores or majestic mountains — which do you choose?

WalletHub, a website that offers free credit scores and reports, ranked the best and worst states for a road trip based on total expenses, available activities and safety. Here are their picks for the 10 best.

1. Oregon

  • Ranked among the top five states for the most scenic byways, Oregon is known for its hiking trails and lakes ideal for fishing.
  • Oregon is very safe, but it’s certainly not inexpensive.
  • Where to go: Crater Lake National Park

2. Utah

  • The snow-peaked mountains of Utah give this state some the most scenic byways in the United States.
  • If you travel here, there is no need to worry about safety as little crime is committed.
  • Where to go: Arches National Park

3. Washington

  • Washington State is tied for first place for having the highest percentage of total area designated as national parkland.
  • This natural getaway is perfect for hikers and outdoorsmen as it is ranked #2 for having the most overall activities.

4. North Carolina

  • This East Coast state was ranked #1 for having the most scenic byways.
  • North Carolina’s family-friendly beaches are a great spot to bring the kids with a relaxing atmosphere for the adults.

5. Louisiana

  • Famous for its rich culture, storied history, and unique cuisine, Louisiana is sure to show any traveler a great time.
